The Thompson Machine Tool Group was founded in 1971 and their focus is on buying and selling of used machine tools.Craft Machine Tools supplies handheld plasma cutters from Hypertherm that are used to perform cutting operations. The machines, which have a cutting capacity of up to 50 mm, are used for fast and precise metal cutting operations.

Other than Thompson Machine Tools the Group comprises of six other companies; Craft Machine Tools, with its core business in new machine tools, Interprovince Engineering Supplies, focusing on machine tool accessories, Trison Machine Movers, Landson Properties, FKF Finance and Trackman Auctioneers.

In 2005 as part of the Craft Machine Tools initial growth strategy the Group decided to take Craft Machine Tools and its brands into the other provinces like Eastern and Western Cape.Craft Machine Tools is the driving force in the group and they have opened a branch in Kwazulu Natal.
